Walbum - Week XIII

December 3rd, 2006

I picked up another cold this week. I don’t know how I did it… All I want to do is have soup and go to sleep.

Because being sick is not really the best for recording or writing music, I’ve been doing some recording tests to see how the new fostex is working out. I’m trying to find the right way to record the guitar on the fostex and then polish it in the computer. For my editing software, I’m using Cool Edit Pro (Cool Edit Pro is actually now called Adobe Audition, but I don’t have to worry about that because I’m using version 1.0, from 1997). I wish I knew how to use it better. I’m not getting very good results. Things sound muffled and have too much reverb.

Using the Fostex to help with Multi-tracking has me inspired in a new direction with this project. It has me thinking about creating ensemble music rather than just solo guitar music. I bought some banjo strings this week and I’m going to see if my banjo playing is up to the job of being recorded.

I also started work on a new tune this week. I was having dinner (chicken noodle soup) and typing ideas into Sibelius. The next day I fleshed out some of the lines on a piano at the Brookline Music School in between lessons. And later that day, I worked out how they would fit on the guitar with harmony. My next step will probably be back to the computer. I like this idea of bouncing around song fragments to different formats. I often get stuck running in place with one way of writing. Switching things around seems to free me up.
