Walbum - Week VIII

October 29th, 2006

It dawned on me this week that I’m running behind schedule. My goal is not to just write 10 tunes by the end of the year, but also record them. I forgot to budget in time for the woes of recording. uggh.

I booked the date for the performance debut of this music: Tuesday, 1/18/06 at Brookline Music School. That’s something to get excited about. For me, Performing is much easier than recording.

I’m writing just about everyday now. I’m titling the tunes by the date I’ve started them. Not all of them get past the first day. This was an exercise I used to do back in 1999. I had a series of projects that titled “30 Second Tunes.” My goal was to just simply write 30 seconds of music each day and then move on. After about a month of doing that I would revisit my work and then begin to develop them into tunes. I seem to be taking a similar approach now.

I took some tune ideas over to Tim Miller and he gave me some good suggestions for development. Just listening to the way he interpreted my tunes was helpful. I didn’t realize how possessive I was about certain aspects of my tunes. It was keeping me from developing them. It was very helpful to get his perspective and advice.

Sibelius has this great feature where I can publish music to their website and anyone can come by and check out my scores. How perfect for this project! My page on Sibelius is: http://members.sibeliusmusic.com/brendanburns.
Check it out.
