September 1

Because we live & work in Allston, Valerie & I don’t teach on September 1. It is the ” Big Move Day” in Greater Boston. Allston, in particular gets hit hard because it houses a lot of BU & BC students. We cancel lessons because the whole neighborhood shuts down with traffic, double parked vehicles & furniture congested sidewalks. Most of the time we like to walk around on 9/1 and see the craziness first hand. This year were stepping out for a ball-game, but that hasn’t left us without some fireworks
This happened right outside our apartment (see right). Trucks have a hard time making a right hand turn onto Glennville Ave. and as a result sometimes they side-swipe a car on either side of the corner. This time it was on Parkvale Ave. The truck somehow came too close to the SUV and then turned, catching the vehilcle’s wheel-well in the process. I don’t think the drivers really understood the full extent of the damage at first. They just backed up and tried to go for it again, but this just logded them deeper into the wheel-well.
The owner of the SUV came out quickly and kinda freaked out a bit. Her panic stopped the Truck drivers from doing any more damage. She called the police and backed away from the drivers to slow the situation down. After a couple of minutes, she regained her composure and got in her SUV to dislodge it from the Budget Truck. The operation looked succesfull. She lost some superficial wheel covering, but because she stopped the drivers from trying to doing it on their own, she prevented them from ripping her car apart. Good job for her.
And as I write this, a “Vitamin Water” truck has just made an annoucement that they are giving out free water to all movers today. It’s going to be a crazy weekend.
More pics to come as the weekend develops.
