A Mouse In The House

August 16th, 2006

TrapLast night I heard mouse activity coming from the kitchen. I was working in the computer room and really didn’t to deal with my resident mice. Around 10:30pm I made an emergency trip to Marty’s to pick up some beverages before they closed. I turned off all the lights in the apartment and went down the street to pick some brews. When I came back, I opened the door to the sounds of scurrying. It sounded like mice running everywhere, trying to get back to their hiding places in our floor-boards. I noticed that the scurrying was going on longer than usual and quickly seized an opportunity to catch one in the act. I flipped on the light in the kitchen & found a mouse in the garbage can; trying to jump out of it. The trouble was, the garbage bag wasn’t too full and he couldn’t get enough momentum to hurdle out. I watched him (I’ll assume it’s a he) make two attempts before I took control of the situation. I was not going to let this mouse just hop on out at his leisure. I made some sort of loud grunt at the mouse to elicit a fear response. It was just as I expected. It played dead. I stepped over the trash and looked in to see where it was hiding. Thinking that it might make another, last ditch, jump for it, I started placing glue traps on top of the garbage, hoping that it would get snagged by one in the process. After about three traps were placed, I noticed there hadn’t been any movement or attempts. I started moving some of the garbage with a long kitchen utensil; expecting to see the mouse hiding in the darkness. As I moved a coffee cup & some wrappers to reveal the second layer of trash in my bin, I realized that I’m somewhat afraid of mice. In particular, I’m afraid of their spry nature and the possibility that one might bolt out of the garbage can and attack me. With images of a flying ninja mouse in my head, I quickly changed battle-plans and decided to keep this mouse more afraid of me, than I was of it. I made another loud grunting sound and then took a deep breath before I grabbed and tied up the waste bag as fast as I possibly could. One of the drawstring ties broke in the process and I tried seal the gap as quickly as possible, fearing that flying mouse thing again. When I had it properly contained, I held it out at an arm’s length and hustled down the stairs and out the apartment to the trash. It was trash night, so the dumpsters were on the sidewalk outside of the apartment. Thinking that the mouse might eat it’s way out of the bag and travel back into the apartment building and up to my suite, I crossed the street to my neighbor’s dumpster & deposited my bag. And that’s where I left it. All I had to do was take out the trash. I wish all of my mice would be so cooperative.

I found two more holes this week. One was by a heater (like usual) and the other was underneath a floor planel in the kitchen. It’s just slightly raised, but they get in & out from there. I’m going to put some poison & steel wool in there tonight.

I threw out another mouse this evening. I was listening to it making noise in the kitchen, and when I heard it jump into the trash I pounced, turned on the light and starting making grunting noises. I threw in two towels on top of it to freak it out and keep from jumping.
It was a big mouse. It’s now wrapped up in a bag and in my neighbors dumpster. ha ha!!

GET A CAT!!………..i UNDERSTAND SHORT HAIRED CATS CAN BE OK SOMETIMES FOR FOLKS WITH ALLERGIES……THE ONLY HAZARD OF A CAT IS RECEIVING ON A RGULAR BASIS DEAD MICE AT YOUR DOORSTEP, THAT YOU JUST NOTICED BEFORE YOUR FOOT IS COMING DOWN ON TOP OF IT………SPLAT!! Maybe it is hereditary, but prior to cats in our lives, I had very similar reactions, and movements like yourself…..including standing up on a kitchen chair coaxing, pleading to please leave my kitchen alone…….it was not successful, and I came to accept a coexistance…until the cats!! I now have no more live mice!! Love Aunt Kathy………CARRY ON!!

I got another one tonight. It was a small mouse. It just walked into a glue trap. I didn’t even have it set anywhere, it was just out of sight underneath a cabinet. I’ll spare everyone the details.
